Monitoring sustained traffic
Continuously high data traffic presents a different load pattern from a short-lived peak.
The value of monitoring goes beyond checking whether a device is reachable. Traffic trends and changes in operation also need to be interpreted. Increasing load, an unusual drop in traffic or a connection problem may all warrant investigation.
Capacity planning therefore needs to distinguish between nominal connection speed, actual traffic and available headroom.
